Week 63 – Coping in the cold

Another week of work outside, and the updates are getting much easier to write as they focus on very specific areas at a time. This week was the completion of the coping edges to the walls, lots of grouting and the start of the decking. The coping edging was made from the same tiles as the main patio area which meant lots of cutting for two days to create the right width and the various corner joins, prior to then lots of fiddly work to ensure the right angle on every tile to ensure the rainwater ran consistently away from the walls and into beds or grass areas. The decking was fitted in the main area, although that was then put on hold as further rendering and work on the wall and laying of steps on that side is needed before the decking edging and finishing is applied. The last element to go will be the glass balustrade to one side of the decking to separate the patio and the decking area. On the Friday the grouting started, initially on the walls, and then half of the main patio was completed on Saturday.

Other work to be completed outside includes the fitting of all drainage around the patio, a last slim line of tiles to join the patio and kitchen floor once the drainage is installed and lots of painting of the walls now that the coping edges are in and remedial work has been completed on the join areas underneath them. This might all potentially completed in the next week, with then a switch back to inside of the house for a final week or so of completing relatively small tasks in there. I suspect its another 3 weeks of work in total though, and that is before we agree a further two rooms to be started on after we’ve “finished”…

Main work this week:

  • Edging applied to top of steps into garden to provide clean edges to grassed area (although seeding is needed on the newly formed flatter earth we now have there!)
  • Coping edging applied to all of the upper and lower retaining walls and beds
  • Walls tidied and holes filled to enable final preparation and painting to a completed finish
  • Membrane fitted to decking area to sit under decking planks
  • Decking fitted to main area, with some final small cuts to be made to the back corner
  • Grout applied to all walls and coping tiles, and all washed down to provide a clean finish
  • Grout applied to 50% of main patio area and initial residue cleaned off (rain completed the task on Sunday)
