With the better weather the week got off to a cracking start with 3 days of solid patio laying to build on the work started last weekend. By Wednesday we had 100+ tiles laid and progress was looking good – until the main builder decided that the alignment to the internal tiling was not good enough. On closer inspection this was due to a very slight difference in the size of the internal and external (allegedly matching!) tiles we’d ordered and had delivered months ago. Whilst we were considering if it was something we could live with (it wasn’t!) they had made the decision to take them up and start again next week with a plan to manage how to deal with the slight variance in size. This was probably the right decision as the overall look is reliant on a clean in and out alignment and whilst it it started as very minimal it was a growing issue the further they went, but at this stage it was disappointing for all to lose a week of solid work on it. Friday was spent pulling up the already laid tiles, and we start again next week.

Whilst that drama was unfolding the bathroom continued to progress with the wall, window frame and ceiling painting completed and then the second fix plumbing going in. We now have working shower heads and controls and the toilet is plumbed internally, but still needs the external soil pipe work to be completed.

There was also lots of touch up painting completed throughout the hall and kitchen as we edge ever closer to a final snagging list review. As we near the completion internally we took the opportunity to rearrange furniture into the right rooms and reclaim others that had been a dumping ground for stuff – including the bar!

Weekly update:

  • Laying of patio tiles across the main patio area… until it was determined the alignment was not right, which led to…
  • … removal of tiles laid ready for a new plan!

  • Touch up of kitchen walls where needed
  • Final coat of paint to double doors between kitchen and hall, including cutting in to skirting and tiled floor – protective film to still to be removed after final inspection next week
  • Further painting to window in extension area, including final sanding and caulking of window sill. Protective tape to be removed after final inspection next week
  • Painting of bathroom ceiling completed
  • Painting of bathroom window completed
  • Painting of bathroom walls completed
  • Installation of shower controls and shower heads in bathroom
  • Fitting of toilet and towel rail (to be re-checked as not currently heating up)
  • Further work to the coving in the hallway – painting and filling, now leaving just the last part of the blending of the new to old area next week
