Week 61 – Digging in for the cold spell

A very productive week also marked a major milestone as no work at all was carried out in the house. Whilst that might not sound like much of a highlight, it was a nice feeling to have our house back and not have half an eye from 7.30am everyday to see them arriving and needing to be ready to let them in. It also means we can keep the doors closed all day and the heat in and work without distractions. That does mean the poor guys have been working away in the cold all week, and that is only likely to get worse next week.

The patio was the main focus and is now 90% complete, with just the last angled piece to go. However, there will then be lots of fiddly cuts and fitting to do around the guttering and drainage and then move to completing the wall coping and steps with the same tiles – so still lots of cutting and fitting to go. The beds for the retaining walls and preparation of the steps continued, and the painter focussed on various finishing and touching up of external areas mainly around the patio windows and exterior extension wall.

We expect more work on the decking and finishing of the other steps and wall completion (rendering, painting etc) in that area next week, but again that will be weather permitting. We do also expect a couple of days of internal completion at some point, but that might now be at the end of the project.

Main tasks completed this week:

  • Touch up of multiple areas of the pebble dash exterior wall
  • Final coat and touch up to woodwork of extension roof soffits
  • Further white wash to the patio walls – this will continue until the landscaping work is completed
  • Patio slabs laid to back door, completion of main patio area around to side by cat flap and lounge rear window – we still have all the grouting to be completed
  • More digging and preparation of bedding area at top of the retaining walls to begin levelling beds
  • Further filling of lower retaining wall beds with final earth ready for planting
  • Additional step added to stairs from patio to the garden, this will enable final levelling of grass once the landing area has been tiled for a finished height
  • Steps filled and levelled with concrete ready for tiled levelling to final height per step
  • Side steps filled ready for further layout and completion
